About

Currently I am an assistant professor at the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia. I obtained my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Language and Literacy concentration) at Arizona State University.

My research agenda centers primarily on issues of access to new technologies for immigrant communities in the U.S. In particular, I focus on three distinct but interrelated issues:

1. The multilayered nature of access to instruction in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for culturally and linguistically diverse students. I pay special attention to the multiple literacies, specialized discourses and cultural capital associated with digital literacy practices.

2. The appropriation of technology in family literacy practices in immigrant households. I situate digital literacies within complex ecologies in which knowledge about technology is distributed across family members of different generations.

3. The potential of ICTs for second language learning and first language maintenance efforts. I situate these processes within the transnational practices that immigrant communities engage in, maintaining affiliations with sending countries, and developing networks in the host society.
